REVIEW
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
TV has managed an epic bodyguard romance - Jasper & Eleanor in The Royals
Film has failed. I'm sorry but The Bodyguard is unwatchable.
Verts have fared better. There are some good ones out there. But this is the first 5 star one. BOOM. We have arrived.
This is brilliant. It is short, tight and not a moment is wasted. No going round in circles or endless slaps.
We have a real sense of danger with the threats on Harper Rose's life, and the swift arrival of cynical bodyguard Jack who soon develops feelings for his clients.
We are trusted as viewers to have brains which is refreshing. No voice-overs explaining everything to us, it is shown in a few very well-done montages.
The action is spectacular. Short, powerful, and to the point. It feels real for once.
It all looks phenomenal. Watch it. You will see what I mean. The quality is insane.
The use of sound is another level. Someone put thought into this. Rather than being too loud, awkward, or out of place, this builds the tension.
The shots are incredible...that scene in the dressing room that starts and ends with the coat hangers. Genius.
And oh boy do the cast deliver
Mars brings the star quality that is needed to pull off Harper Rose. But never takes it to diva level. It would be so tempting to do that, or make her weak or a saint. But she doesn't. Instead, she is clearly a mega star but also someone real and genuinely terrified. Best ever depiction of this type of character.
And Jack Byram is absolutely fantastic as bodyguard Jax. Handles all the action brilliantly, puts just enough humour in at the beginning without overdoing it, and nails it when Jax blames himself for one of the later attacks. You will all fall in love with Jax.
The problem with this pair is they are so good they make it look easy. Which it clearly is not given the wasteland of failed bodyguard film attempts.
Give them more roles please!!!!!
They are really helped by an excellent script and the visionary director Nancy Pop
I just have one complaint. This is too short! Just 40 eps. I want more! I got in a proper strop that it ended all too soon.
💖 Top swoonworthy moment:
You would think a bodyguard romance would be easy - but most fail. I’m sorry, but Whitney and Kevin had the chemistry of 2 soggy teabags. Thank you, Mars & Jack Byram for showing everyone how it should be done. Clearly, he falls first, and then she falls harder. It’s absolutely perfect, and not a moment is wasted. MORE PLEASE
🦹🏼♂️ Top villain award:
I can’t tell you as it will ruin it. Just to say it is very well done. Excellent work.
😂 Comedy gold:
This is played straight, but I did enjoy Jax’s expression when he gets caught having a moment when he sees Harper by the pool.
🎺 Unsung hero:
I am actually going to say whoever is responsible for how this looks - because the design is stunning and the production quality is another level. The quality of the images, the lighting, the richness - I don’t know that much about film (see don’t know who to credit for this) but WOW. Standing Ovation.
