Kyle Maddox

What do you do in the Vertical Industry?

Actor

How did you come across Vertical Dramas?

I applied for one on backstage not knowing what it was, but it sounded fun. I auditioned and was cast as the male lead.

What is your favourite project you have worked on so far?

They have all been fun and I take some valuable lessons and memories from each. That said, my most recent (My Mafia Lover's Torture) was the most fun so far. I worked with some amazing cast and crew, made a lot of great connections, and got to play my first vertical antihero. I'm a former cop so it was fun to play the type of guy I used to arrest in a past life!

What is the craziest thing you have found yourself doing while working on a vertical?

Definitely carrying the female lead out of a pool in dress shoes. The scene worked out, but I kept thinking how bad it would be if I slipped on the pool stairs and both of us ended up with broken noses and a few missing teeth.

Any funny stories you can share with us?

On another unreleased one I recently did (My Double Life As the CEO's Wife) we were on the last day of the shoot. We were about 72 hours in and everyone was feeling tired. One of our wonderful day players came in and raised the energy of the entire set. His improv ability was hysterical and he helped us find our second wind for the rest of the way.

Who is your unsung hero? Someone in the industry who should get more credit?

All my people behind the scenes!! Hair/Makeup, Wardrobe, etc, they all make this visual story come to life in such a fun way and I get to work with so many talented people, it's so much fun.

What do you wish more people knew about verticals?

How much work goes into them. Actors only have control of what is in between "action and cut" but I'm always impressed by the efficiency of these things. I've been on sets filming 16 pages a day, with large party/conference scenes, and it always runs like a well oiled machine. Everyone, from #1 on the call sheet to the PA's and everyone in between has to be locked in 12 hours a day. I've been impressed by that.

What developments would you like to see in the industry in the year ahead?

I would love to see better sound editing. Actors are doing great work in a lot of these, and it's unfortunate when it's ruined by a soundtrack that's way too loud, or a GarageBand stock sound that doesn't fit the vibe.

What are you most proud of?

Being 31 and honestly being able to say I've been lucky enough to chase and live both dreams. As a kid I always wanted to be a cop or an actor. I've been able to do and excel at both, and now I've even been able to put the two together.

Which vertical actor would you like to play you in the biopic of your life?

Erik Ruoff for sure.
