Aislinn Evans
What do you do in the Vertical Industry?
I'm an actress! Both the villain and the leading lady.
How did you come across Vertical Dramas?
Last year, I had just signed with my first talent manager, and I was finishing up my first ever play (Beatrice in Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing), and was contemplating what I was going to do with myself when the play wrapped (post-project depression is so real). Literally DAYS before I wrapped the show I booked Trinity in GalateaTV's Sinful Attractions! That was last July and now I'm headed to film my sixth vertical this weekend!
What is your favourite project you have worked on so far?
Honestly the last one I just finished filming, it's not out yet so I can't say much other than keep an eye on ReelShort. But I got so attached to the villian in this one, she was so fabulous, so stylish, and actually had a strong reason for doing everything, rather than the typical "I'm going to ruin your life becasue I can" motive. I also got to work across from the amazing Emma Hullar. We had so much fun on that set, we felt more like sisters by the end and I miss getting to see her everyday.
What is the craziest thing you have found yourself doing while working on a vertical?
Wrestling a man with a gun, "shooting" him in self defense, and having his "lifeless" body lay on top of me. All of this done in a VERY dirty warehouse that stored broadway tour stages. So while I lay there in the dirt and fake blood, I was staring directly at Glinda's Bubble!
Any funny stories you can share with us?
In the last project I wrapped, the leading man is in the hospital at one point and they bring in his medical paperwork. In a break between shooting we were reading the paperwork and realized the name was filled in as "Dummy." 😂
Who is your unsung hero? Someone in the industry who should get more credit?
Crafty! The people on set who keep us FED and FUELED for those long days filming! What they serve for lunch can make or break the second half of the day, because by the time we break for lunch everyone is tired and hungry and if you serve a disappointing lunch, that low energy will persist through the rest of the day. But every single vertical project I've worked on, the food catering has been IMPECABLE. I feel spoiled with the meals they provide us, and it really makes those long days much more manageable.
What do you wish more people knew about verticals?
What we're doing really is revolutionary for this industry—it's not just frivolous melodrama. Everywhere I look as an actor, people are crying, "Hollywood is dying! It’s dead!" But it seems to me that every generation of Hollywood has said the same thing. Hell, they were saying it all the way back when the industry transitioned from silent films to talkies.
And yet, at every turning point, there’s been an innovation that fueled the next generation of storytellers. I genuinely believe verticals are kickstarting the next wave of filmmaking. It's consistent work in an industry where there are fewer projects filming than ever before—and yet, verticals have found a way to meet a high demand. That shouldn’t be underestimated.
What developments would you like to see in the industry in the year ahead?
Stronger female characters with more complex motives than "save me Mr. Man." I have seen the scripts slowly improving and I'm hoping that continues. In my wildest dreams I would hope for residuals for the actors, but I've accepted that we are still a ways away from even discussing that.
What are you most proud of?
I have only been a working actor for about one year. That blows my MIND! Before, I was a model, live host, professional dancer, and even did a short stint as a live streamer. But once I started acting I KNEW this is what I was meant to do and here I am only a year out from my first speaking lines on camera and I'm doing far more than year-ago-me could have ever dreamed. All while maintaining an undefeatable optimistic mindset. I think maintaining that positivity is the hardest part in such a difficult industry, and I'm proud to have not let anything dim that sparkle.
